Pennsylvania Citizens and the Electoral Process

Rationale:
The electoral process is about so much more than the personalties of the candidates and generalized campaign commercials. It is an opportunity for citizens to exercise their civic responsibility in making a voting decision based on how candidates might address these questions: 1) How will the candidates forward the goals and objectives of the nation, the Commonwealth, and my locality? 2) How are the candidates likely to impact my personal life (civil liberties, standard of living, and opportunities) and the lives of those important to me? and 3) How can I locale objective evidence to support my opinions?

Objectives:
  • Explain the roles of citizens and governments in solving problems
  • Evaluate personal motives in shaping voter choice
  • Evaluate how interest groups, individuals, pressing issues, and the media, shape voter choice
  • Evaluate & Understand what issues are important to Pennsylvanians in the 2008
  • Analyze the intent of the Democratic and Republican Presidential Candidates with respect to the aforementioned issues
Operational Plan & Activity:
  • The Issues: 1)Higher Education in PA 2) The Energy Crisis in PA and 3) Transportation Infrastructure in PA
  • Students are counted off into 3 groups; Each group of students will research 1 of the 3 issues presented and will write a 1 page summary on the class blog of their findings. This blog will include the positions of Barack Obama and John McCain on their assigned issues
  • Students will view the live / archived feed of Governor and Judge Rendell's CFF Civics Lesson. During the Lesson Students will respond to questions posed on the class blog. Students must make a minimum of 5 posts in addition to their initial topic post for the purpose of lesson assessment.
