How has the current credit crunch affected PHEAA and its affiliated organization, AES?
What can state government do to contain spiraling education costs at the 14 universities in the State System of Higher Education?
Can the financial aid process at the State System of Higher Education be streamlined, perhaps to something as easy as Lending Tree .com?
How much assistance does the Commonwealth give to the State's community colleges and post-high school vocational schools?

I think that they need to lower the prices of eductaion because it is too expensive. I think that the grant companies need to help some people out because some people won't be able to pay for thier children to go to college

I learned that, the gap between the incomes of people with college degrees and people without a college degrees is widening. So more people are seeing that gap and wanting to go to college and as long as people are going to college they can keep rising the price of intuition because they will continue to pay for it.

* There is new legislation that is expected to pass in the hosue and senate on July 31 to keep the college educatoin price from increasing.
* The education department is required to list the 5% most expensive and the 10% least expensive schools in each category.
* within a year of the bull passing schools will be able to use online calculators to estimate what any given college would cost based upon their income level and their family situation.
* Since the 1990's tuition paid by students and families has made up a huge share of all the money going towards public education dollars
* the higher education has costs many of people millions of dollars that could have been used towards needy students.
* A 1996 law acknowledged that the Pennsylvania State grant program hrough which PHEAA distributed monetary grants to state residents.
John McCain told a reporter that he has been meeting with Mr. Bush for a couple of years about eduactoin policy and would love to continue to do so in the near future. also he claims that mr bush has a very good nationwide reputation on the topic of the education policy.
-Abbbbey! :)
-The Congress noticed that the cost of college was way too expensive and is trying to give the public hope on a break on the bills.
-We are supposed to get online calculators to estimate what the college would cost on the income level of the family situation. Since most students receive financial aid, the family should be able to see the net price rather than the "sticker price"
-Obama's plan is to create a new American Opportunity Tax credit. The first 4,000 of college education is free for most Americans that have college welfare or a loan.
-Students would have to serve 100 hours of community service to qualify for the tax credit and that will take a long times, students don't have all the time in the world to do community service for 100 hours and still make a good money.

July 1st is when the pressures started on colleges escalating prices. Public, private, 2 year and 4 year have a 5 percent most expensive and the 10 percent least expensive in the past 3 years. Pennsylvania may have a brain drain. A dictionary defines the brain drain as "the departure of educated or professinal people..usually for better pay or living conditions" More infomally, brain drain is generally understood to be the steady migration of young, college-educated graduates who attend the state's colleges and then move out of state after completeing their schooling. We are not the only state, there are about 20 others who have a brain drain. Graduates move out of state, making us in higher demand for college bound individuals. Pennsylvania is the fourth largest producer for college students...fourth expensive. Gov Ed Rendell said the state does not have the same price-setting authority over Pitt, Penn State, Temple University and Lincoln University that it does not with teh state's 14 school systems including California, Clarion, Clarion, Edinboro, Indiana and SIippery Rock in Western PA. Average anual tuition is $6,000. (FOUR YEAR RANKED 3 IN 2001) Anual cost for TWO YEAR IS $2,300 AND RANKED 6 IN 2001.

i can't remember.

i agree that we need to lower the cost of education. education has increased greatly in the past couple of years.
i think they really need to reduce the expensives of education because it is getting rediculous. the grant companies should be helping out some people because one they wont be able to pay for there kids college and two if they had to they would be in some mad debt. There is new legislation that is expected to pass in the house and senate on July 31 to pretty much keep the education cost lower so people dont get in so much debt and what not. and every kid that is going through school now and days need to get a college education because that is what it takes now and days to get a good job.
i think the education price is too high. its not fair that we have to pay so much to learn. i think teachers should teach for free.
mr. mendes
i think the only good thing that mr bush did about education was make it that no kid is left behind.
i learned that the prices of college are to high and they need to lower the price. The gap between people with college degrees and people with out is just getting farther apart. The congress realized that the prices of college are too high and is trying to give people a break. Obama is trying to create a new American Opportunity Tax credit.
Pennsylvania is one of the highest tuition paying states in the country. A medium income family has to pay 14.8% of their yearly income for a four-year university. But in Pittsburg a family only pays 8.4% for higher education. Pennsylvania is suffering a brain drain. Brain Drain is when students have been taught in one state and have moved to another state to better themselfs and their family's. Students who are attending public university are more sensitive to the price of college than a student who is attending a privet universities.

College Costs: A new legislation is supposed to clear the House and Senate on July,13. This new law is 1,200 long. The law requires the higher education and be at least as much as five year average. As the federal government increases aid to the students the state government lowers there aid. In 2006-2007 the state and local funding was very generous. Tuition paid by students and parents has increased since the 1990's. The new Higher-Ed Bill: Addresses everything from the federal aid to developing campus safety plans. Student Loans: Bans and revenue sharing between lenders and schools, provides borrowers with more info about federal and private loan options.

higher education in pa
pa has a higher education plan for more than 14 colleges for more than 110,000 students. this is supposed to increase wealth for common wealth. passhe has 20 member board of governers that set a broad policy. governers voted to increase $181 for the 2008-2009 academic year. the canidates thin that this will help grades k-12. john mccain says that they will provide parents with better information about colleges. also by raising the taxes makes it easier for more familes to remember them.also to fix the problem on student lending. barack obama wants early education which really doesnt go with the higher education but. obama also has a zero to five plan witch will provide children with critical support. obama also wants to give the first $4,000 for free to a college education. the reason this is all going into play is because of the college loans and kids are going into dept
I learned that:
Between 2000 and 2005 the average cost of tuition for students attending four-year public universities jumped 40 percent, according to the Board, a New York City-based nonprofit organization made up of 4,300 colleges and universities students paid an average of $5,491 for tuition and fees in 2005 up from $3,925 in 2000.
The College Board also released a report that found that 66 percent of white American high school graduates enroll in College within year compared to 57 percent of African Americans
Adults with a bachelor's degree working a typical year-round job get paid an average 60 percent more than adults with only a high school diploma.
College graduates also lead healthier lifestyles and are at lower risk of obesity and heart disease.
John McCain has said little about post-secondary education so far in his campaign. During an event in New Hampshire in December, he said he supports tax deductions for college tuition and that "we've got to do everything we can to make education affordable for all Americans."
Later, he corrected his statement, stating that he misunderstood the question and does not support tax deductions for tuition. He has said he backs greater federal funding of Pell grants and government low-interest student loans, though he missed the vote on a bill that cuts the interest rate on loans and increases Pell grants. The Pell grant program is a type of post-secondary, educational federal grant program sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education. Grants are awarded based on a "financial need" formula determined by the U.S. Congress using criteria submitted through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
If he is elected President, Senator Obama hopes to give a $4,000 annual tax credit to low-income student or their parents toward college tuition. In return, students would have to give 100 hours of community service.
Making post-secondary education more affordable is another pledge Obama has made. He proposes the American Opportunity Tax Credit that would make community college tuition free and over two-thirds of the cost of tuition at the average public college or university for most students. However, he has not released details on how he intends to fund such an expensive program.
KERA CUSTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There is supposed to be a law passing in congress that they can only raise the prices so high. college need to lower their prices so everyone can afford it, it is just getting absoltly ridiculous. Soon you might not even be able to get loans, the way the economy is going and then the majority will not be able to go to college because it will be highly expensive and hard to et loans from the bank so to solve everything, i think that the colleges should just lower their prices, even if it isnt good for them because they should think about the welfare of the people.
i learned that the rise in college cost has the cogress taking stps to give the public a break in tuition bills. New legislation is expected to clear the house and senate to include provisions designed to put pressure on colleges, universities, and states to lower tuition bills. Conrgress provided about 20 billion in federal aid for students over the last 5 years. The price for Universities went up 46% between 1999 and 2005, when the amoun to educate only went up 0.2%
tuition for colleges has increased a lot in the past couple of years. congress has noticed these increased prices, and are creating provisions in order to limit these rises. now, colleges in the top five percent most increased prices, have to report back to the education department and tell their reasons as to why the tuition prices have risen so much. the educaion department will also have to list the 5 percent most expensive and 10 percent least expernsive schools in the country.
Obama- Obama will make college affordable for all Americans by creating a new American Opportunity Tax Credit. This universal and fully refundable credit will ensure that the first $4000 of a college education is completely free for most Americans, and will cover two-thirds the cost of tution compeletly free for most students. Recipentsof the credit will required to conduct 100 hours of community service. Obama will streamline the financial aid process by eliminating the cureent federal financial aid application and enabling families to apply simply by checking a box on their tax form, authorizing their tax information to be used and elminating the need for a seperate application.
McCain- America is facing increased competition from overseas like never before. Higher education is as much a part of that competition as the job sector, and we must rise to the challenge and modernize our universities so that they retain their status as producers of the most skilled workforce in the world. The answer is not to impose more regulations on institutions, but to encourage the government to support innovative approaches to education, removing regulatory barriers that prevent us from moving forward with new ideas. We have seen significant turmoil in student lending. McCain has proposed an expanision of the lender-of-last resort capaility of the federal student loan system and will demand the highest standard of integrity for participating private lenders. Effective reforms and leveraging the private sector will ensure the necessary funding of higher education aspirations, and create a simpler and more effective program in the process.
Higher Education in General-
The top ten state policy issues for higher education 2008 are the Affordability, State's Fiscal Forecasts, College Preparation, Accountability, Campus Security, Immigration, 2008 Preseidential Election, Retooling State Financial Aid Program, Affirmative Action, and Economic Development.

The 'credit crunch' has affected student loans and made it harder to get them compared to anyone being able to get one just a few years ago despite bad credit.
Teachers and administrators could always have their salaries lowered, which would be the most obvious way to lower the rising costs of college/university. The problem with this is that then the prof. probably wouldn't have any intiative to continue working at their college/univirsity and would either change jobs or schools.
The fact is that the economy is doing poorly, so even with finical aid it might not be enough to give students the money the need to go to school. Though it might be able to help 'streamline' most of the middle class students.
On top of that, secondary schools are raising admission costs, making it harder for everyone who wants to continue schooling to do so.
I learned the new legislation is putting reductions to put pressure on the colleges, universities and states to control the extremely high price of college education. One way of pressuring these colleges would be by highlighting the top 5% with the highest increase in tuition. Universities don't want to be on top 10 party schools, or 5% with highest increase in tuition. Universities don't want to be on top 10 party schools, or 5% most expensive. As well as the bad lists there will be a good list like 10% least expensive. Online calculators are becoming a new idea for students and families in tight financial situations. PA's public 4 yr. schools rose to the 5th most expensive in all 50 states. PA's public 2 yr. schools rose to 4th most expensive. 3/4's of full time students recieved some type of assistance last year. McCain & Obama's Ideas for Higher Ed. are fix the complicated tax credits/benefits. Obama also wishes to simplify the application process for financial aid.

I think that the price of education is becoming way to high. I understand that it takes money for a good education, and it pays off in the end, but people with money shouldn't be the only ones that have the oppurtunity to got to college and then get a good job. There is a new legislation tha is expected to pass in the house and senate on July 31 to keep the college education from increasing. I think this is a very good thing, and in return, it will give more people the chance to go to college.
I learned that recently colleges have become more expensive than past years. Recently pennsylvainias four-year colleges have raised the tuittion average seven percent with only vermont, new jersey and new hampshire in front of pennnsylvania. Two-year college tuition has raised four persent. This tuition increase has been even more detromental towards private schol students. The private school tuitio has raised abiut seven percent and continue to raise. Obama and mccain both agree that the the school tuition have become very unaffortable for the average student and plan to change this.
Obama will make college affordable for all Americans by creating a new American Opportunity Tax Credit.
- the higher education has costs many of people millions of dollars that could have been used towards needy students.
- A 1996 law acknowledged that the Pennsylvania State grant program hrough which PHEAA distributed monetary grants to state residents.

Higher education in Pennsylvania is having problems for several reasons. First of all, the cost of tuition is steadily increasing. Many see this as a failure on the colleges’ part, but most colleges are very efficient with their budgets. The state thinks it should step in and give the colleges less money to try to reduce the cost, but there are other issues that cause the colleges to raise their costs. They have to pay for the best professors and research facilities, which is more expensive with more specialization and newer technology. Compared to all of the average state tuitions, Pennsylvania is the third highest
Another problem with higher education in Pennsylvania is that most of the people going to college in Pennsylvania leave the state. This is being referred to as a “brain drain” because of the educated people leaving. Despite this, 22% of adults in Pennsylvania have bachelor’s degrees or higher.
Senator McCain recognizes the problem with prices in higher education. He attributes this to competition in the market. He plans to alleviate this problem by simplifying tax benefits and financial aid, as well as eliminating “earmarking,” or “pork barrel projects.” He also wants to reform the student loan program by putting higher demands on lenders.
Senator Obama proposes what he calls the “American Opportunity Tax Credit.” The opportunity he is referring to is guaranteed coverage of the first $4000 of higher education for most Americans. Recipients of this credit need to conduct 100 hours of community service, however. Also, Obama would like to simplify the process for applying for financial aid. This is similar to McCain’s proposal.
